About the Breed
Mangalitza pigs are a large framed, dark-skinned, curly coated pig that originate from Austira/Hungary. They are an extremely hardy breed, rarely becoming ill and capable of surviving the harsh winters of the region in which they were farmed. Useful qualities in areas where there were no vets or animal hospitals.
The meat produced from Mangalitza’s was once in great demand all over Europe and even traded on the Vienna Stock Exchange. At its peak a hundred thousand animals a year were sold from Hungary to the West. Mangalitza’s are renowned for producing high quality bacon, the original Hungarian salami sausage and parma ham.
Mangalitza’s come in three different colours which vary from region to region. The colours are:
Swallow Bellied - Black with a white under belly
Blonde - A dense coat varying from grey to yellow
Red - A slightly larger pig in size and weight with a thick reddish coat
Mangalitza Pigs were imported into the UK for the first time in 2006 by Tony York of Pig Paradise. A total of seventeen pigs were imported, three boars (one of each colour) and fourteen females.
We own two of the original imported females, one blonde and one red. We had our first litter of red piglets in November 2006. Our intentions are to try and keep the colours true, but this is proving difficult with only three original boars introduced to the UK, with one if Scotland, one in Wales and the other in Northern England. We are hoping in the future that more blood lines will be introduced to the UK.
